week seven

The one aspect this week that I found most valuable was how teaching 10th graders is so much different then teaching eighth graders. I picked up my fourth class this week which is teaching computer projects to the sophomores and found that their needs, wants, and level of learning are so distinct then the eighth graders which I have been teaching. I have realized that putting together their lessons and activities are different then when I plan for the eighth graders. In addition, I have found that teaching two classes before I teach the 10th graders that at times the transition is sometimes difficult. I do look forward to teaching this new class and the challenges that will come with it.

Another aspect this week that I found most valuable has been on teaching databases to the eighth grade computer concepts classes. This is a new concept for these students and having to introduce this has been difficult. It will be interesting to see how the students do with this unit. I know they will eventually understand the concept.

The one thing that I would change this week if I had the chance to start the week over would be to revamp how I introduced the concept of databases to the eighth graders. I have learned that I have to break this concept down even more and take this concept even slower then when I taught spreadsheets to them. Even the gifted students are having difficultly with this unit. I have come to realize that teaching database is without doubt going to take time, but I am up for the challenge.

  1. I agree that teaching older students is much different than teaching the younger ones. I have a class of juniors and seniors that I have to change the things I relate to them. They have to be different from the 9th graders I have, realizing that they are more mature and have different interest. I am also going to be teaching databases soon and am also worried about engaging these students. Try creating a database of their class, using age, likes and dislikes, extracurricular activities, and classes.

  2. Bettie, sounds like you are going through similar things to me. I picked up a Computer Aps class this week which was all freshman and it is different than teaching the juniors and seniors. I have to keep them more engaged and learning. For the database, like Rich said have them create a database of some things or you could also have them create a database using Musical Chairs, where each students moves around to each computer. It is just a thought! Good luck with it!

  3. I totally agree with you that it is amazing to whitness different learning levels in the grades. My youngest group are ninth graders so it would be even more drastic to whitness the difference between eight graders and seniors! It is neat though that you get that oppertunity.
    Hope you enjoy next week!

  4. Access is the one application in the Microsoft Office Suite that students, and sad to say, teachers know the least about in its intelligent capabilities. It is by far the greater in intelligence than Word, Excel, or PowerPoint, and experimenting on your own to demonstrate and teach students is what it's all about! :) Have fun!
